CCBI History

The Church of Christ Bible Institute was founded in 1928 by Bishop R.C. Lawson as the educational arm of the newly established Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. The first location was in the Refuge Church of Christ then pastored by our founder, Bishop R.C. Lawson. The Church of Christ Bible Institute served as a vehicle for training many of the pastors and leaders of our organization. Our school is unique in that it was the first Apostolic Bible Institute founded in the Northeast.

Our curriculum has always been Bible centered and apostolic. The history of the Institute in many ways parallels that of its parent organization, the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We have grown in enrollment and our curriculum has kept pace with the growing needs of our times, but we have not left our apostolic heritage. Our school offers the unique opportunity for ministers and lay people to study the word of God in a Christian atmosphere with qualified and Spirit -filled instructors. The Church of Christ Bible Institute is located in the heart of the Harlem community, within easy access to all public transportation, public libraries and museums.

Our Purpose & Philosophy

The Church of Christ Bible Institute has for its primary purpose the training of men and women for the Christian ministries, or church vocations through a program of biblical, theological and general studies.

It seeks to present the full truth with a view to the rational integration of the major fields of learning in the context of the Judeo-Christian revelation and to promote the realization of Christian values in student character.

The Bible is viewed as an integrative force in the total educational program with a strong major of at least 36 credits of Bible for all students. The prominence given to biblical studies stems from the premises that the Bible is uniquely the word of God. This position places the Church of Christ Bible Institute squarely in the mainstream of biblical theology in terms of historical Christianity. Our program is inclusive as well as specialized, it is designed to give broad knowledge as well as equip students with information and skills necessary for a pursuit of the Christian ministries.

Doctrinal Statement

  • We believe in the New Testament Apostolic Christianity. The Word of God is accepted in its entirety as the final source of authority in matters of faith and practice. There was a miraculous guidance of the Holy Spirit in the original autographs extending to all parts of the Scriptures equally.

  • We believe in one God, that He is one in essence and person. One form of whom, and in whom there is a divine three-fold personal manifestation and relationship known as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe that Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, that is to say, He Himself is the very God; that He took upon Himself human nature, being conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary; that He died upon the cross as a true substitute, and that His death was a sufficient expiation for the guilt of all men.

  • We believe that Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead and that He ascended into Heaven, where He is now our interceding High Priest.

  • We believe in the visible, personal and premillennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ for His church of righteousness and peace.

  • We believe in the everlasting conscious blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting conscious punishment of the lost.

  • We believe that the Church is an elect company of believers, baptized by the Holy Spirit in one body, each believer living a consistent Christian life in the power of the Holy Spirit.
